Strategic Organization Design Core Services
A year is the amount of time it takes the earth to circle the sun. We humans mark the year out by four seasons. The seasons each have signs and characteristics that tell us as farmers and gardeners what activities to engage in to assure a good harvest.
In temperate climates winter is the time to repair equipment, plan out the work for the year, and get some rest. In the spring it is time to prepare the soil, plant the seeds, and begin to irrigate. The summer calls for cultivation, irrigation, and the beginning of the harvest. In the fall harvest continues to completion, soil is often turned, and equipment is examined for repair and reconditioning.
This cycle of seasonal activity is a wonderful general schematic to guide our focus of activity throughout the year.
Organizations can be depicted as flowing through seasonal cycles of activities as well. These organizational seasons can be a general guide for leaders and members to perform specific activities at specific times in order to assure success.
The Strategic Organizational Design, Inc. core services are organized around the seasonal cycle of organizations.
The first season is “Crafting Strategy.” In this season you look at the broad picture and into the future to determine how you are going to compete in the organization’s environment.
With a strategy in hand, you can move to the second season: “Designing the Organization with Webs of Intangible Assets.” The purpose of this season is to design the organization you need so that you can enact the strategy that you have created.
With the organization design in hand, you can enter the third season: “Designing and Doing Change.” This is the implementation and execution phase of organizing. You craft a plan for how you will implement the organization design that you have created to fulfill your strategy. Then you do it.
The fourth season is to “Discover What Works.” Without measurement, assessment, and evaluation, you will not know if what you did actually accomplished what you set out to do. Without knowing what works and what does not work you cannot make adjustments that will lead to improvement.
In order to navigate the seasonal cycle of organizations we offer two additional services that support the journey through the cycle:
Deliberation is messy. Meetings are messy. But you have to deliberate to arrive at collective action and the main forums for deliberation are to hold meetings. You cannot navigate the seasons without well-designed, well-executed meetings. We Design and Facilitate Meetings to support our clients’ journey.
Leaders who face new situations often need an objective third party to help them figure out how they need to think and behave differently in order to get better outcomes. We do Executive Coaching to help leaders examine how they lead and to make improvements.
Each service has its own page within this website with additional explanation of our approach and resources that will be helpful.
Design by Default versus Strategic Intentional Design
Design by default happens when you have a haphazard approach to creating organizations and do not look for both the intended and unintended consequences of organization design choices. When you intentionally design organizations you have an approach and methodology that guides you in systematically crafting an organization that can reach desired outcomes. When you strategically design an organization you intentionally design with the marketplace context and the future in mind. We strive to do strategic intentional design.
When our clients approach us about an engagement, they are usually focused on one of our services that addresses a serious presenting problem that they are grappling with. We are delighted to help them with the issues that have brought us together. But we always keep and eye on the big picture and the long-term consequences of what we do with them. So even though the client may not be purchasing all or our services, the overall perspective of our whole suite of services informs how we perform each element of our service offering. We offer a buffet. You pick what you want and need and we will help you remember how the work we do with you fits into the whole picture.
