I have a manuscript in the editing process and plan to have the book available in January 2014. The working title is “Strategy, Barriers, & Filters: Getting the Water to the Ends of the Rows.” It addresses the barriers and filters to getting a strategy both formulated and implemented in organizations and how to overcome those barriers and filters with sound, deliberate organization design choices.
Here are my previous comments in this section:
The redesign of my business actually got its kick start when Hugh Wilson and I
hiked Grand Canyon in June of 2009. The rarefied air and punishing heights of the Canyon pushed me to the edge of my endurance and brought hyper-clarity to the several personal and business cross roads I had arrived at. This extreme experience pushed me to do a “zero based” reconsideration of my life’s work
I had served on the IMC USA Board of Directors with Ken Lizotte CMC®. Ken is the Chief Imagination Officer of the Emerson Consulting Group (http://www.thoughtleading.com/) and has written a book with the title “The Expert’s Edge (http://www.theexpertsedge.com/). In the book he introduces the “5 Pillars of Thought Leading” model for thought leading business strategy. I have adopted his model as the core of my approach to redesigning my business. As a part of the Writing Pillar of my plan I began blogging in January of 2010. The first six months were a little rocky, but I feel that I am beginning to get the hang of it (September 2010). I have also done a sporadic start at Tweeting, opened a Facebook page, and have plans for a YouTube channel. Social Media here we come!
I currently have an article in revision that was previously available on the Internet at the STS Roundtable Wiki Site bearing the title “An Action Research Approach to Poverty Reduction”. It is co-authored with Warner Woodworth and was originally prepared in 2007 for delivery at the Action Research Conference sponsored by the Work Research Institute in Oslo, Norway. It should be available in January 2014.
There are also several presentations and short articles floating around the Internet if you do a search on my name.
I have also written a white paper with the title “Silos! Beloved and Glorious Silos!” I have been using it with clients in various strategy and organization design circumstances. Send me an e-mail and I can forward it to you.
My colleague Raghu Kowshik of Flextronics and I are in the process of writing an article on the role of Information Technology organizations in enabling social responsibility in organizations. Raghu and I have been collaborating on projects and thought development for almost two decades.
Pam Posey, DBA of “Eyes on Performance” (http://eyesonperformance.com/) and I have been collaborating on wrinting and presenting on the role of IT in organization design. Our paper “TAILS AND DOGS: Who’s Wagging? The Inversion of ‘Technical Conversion Processes’ and ‘IT Technical Systems’ in Designing Organizations” will be published in the Proceedings of the 2010 LERA Annual Meeting (http://www.lera.uiuc.edu/)
I also have a couple more books outlined on my computer. But I need to get them written. I plan on mustering up the courage and discipline to put “pen to paper” on a continuous basis for the next decade.
